Travel light. For a trip that will start in Iceland known for rapidly changing Autumn weather with rain and wind in the forecast I am determined to be warm.
It is going to be a challenge flying various budget airlines . Stay tuned.
On the aircraft I will wear a black pullover Helly Hansen fleece with black pants and shoes topped off by a midi-length windproof raincoat with a hood, and a cashmere scarf/pashmina patterned in fall colours including a rusty red. Also will have a money belt and neck pouch. There will be an inflatable travel pillow in my daypack. Light weight knit gloves and a toque will be in my coat pocket. On my feet black water resistant reiker high top sneakers. I am waiting to board and this is exactly what I am wearing but have another layer underneath as have been advised for the chill of Iceland. I feel overstuffed and overheated but I usually am chilly once on board!
Pack (at the most)
Tops: sleeveless black tank, short sleeve black t-shirt, black long sleeve tshirt, grey and black sleeveless top, sleeveless black button front top. Long sleeve black print t shirt.
Bottoms: Three pairs of black pants, one pair black capris (which can be used as an under layer or pyjama bottoms).
Layers - black zip front fitted MEC fleece Mid-Layer, light weight black cardigan, black cashmere cardigan.
Shoes - flipflops
Misc: silk patterned scarf, black open weave scarf, black gloves, black ear warming headband, underwear, socks
Grooming - comb, sunscreen, lipstick, mascara, travel shampoo, travel body wash.
Bandaid, polysporin, Tylenol, eye drops, earplugs Note my hairstyle will be wash and wear, comb optional. I will pack a compact mirror so I can check my look when we are out all day from morning to night. Toothbrush, toothpaste. Detergent sheet (the size of a piece of writing paper).
Mobile phone with charger doubles as a camera and I have a neck holder for it to keep it handy and safe if I don't have it in inside coat pocket.
Converter
Immersion Water heater to make a coffee or hot chocolate.
Note: everything is black except for two scarves. That is an advantage of fall travel.
For a night at a concert I will be in black from head to toe with either the silk scarf or the lacy scarf to dress up my top which could be the buttoned up black cashmere cardigan.
I can always buy something along the way!
My trip begins 22 Sept 2024 first Iceland, then Ireland and then several more destinations including Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Tunisia, Spain and France. We are travelling independently.
I will take a Ryanair approved under seat backpack that opens like a suitcase and a rolling suitcase that will fit in the overhead bin. I bought the backpack from Amazon which clearly states it is Ryanair approved. Will add a picture and let you know how this works out. My raincoat takes up a lot of room so I plan to wear it on all trips by air.
Well just an update - 25 Sept - I have donated the pashmina - too big and bulky! I am already hanging with things like the neck pouch and phone cord. If I need another scarf I will buy one as a souvenir. I have brought no jewellery with me except for a fake jade ring which I wear all the time as I feel funny without at least one ring and I forgot the flipflops at home. So I have one pair of shoes and that's fine. I may throw out the money belt as I prefer the pouch - it's just one more thing that seems bulky. I also threw out a thicker pair of socks, my shoes feel better with a thin sock. And I brought several pairs of matching thin socks so if I lose one no big deal. I am wearing pretty much the same thing every day - and prefer stretchy fabric. I love my MEC fleece. I may donate the Helly Hansen fleece as it isn't stretchy plus it's a pullover. It's been 3 to 9 degrees in Iceland with light wind and no rain - I have been warm with the coat and some layers.
Update - have now been a week in Ireland my coat has withstood wind and rain, still loving the MEC midlayer.
Further update - over 30 C in Crete - It's tricky to pack for 8 degrees C with wind and rain and also for 30 degree C sun and sand. One pair of black pants has a light linen weight and are very loose so they can be worn in heat and the legs easily pull up to expose the knees. In Crete I am tempted to buy a sundress - but so far the all black is working if not ideal. I have cut the legs off one pair of black pants to make shorts - like just above the knee. That works. Glad to have the sleeveless tops! Now the cashmere cardigan, the raincoat, the waterproof pants, long sleeve t-shirts, Helly Hansen fleece and MEC midlayer are of no use - however will need them again down the road. We haven't needed to wash clothes yet (a few sink rinses) but we will be soon heading to a laundry! It is 7 Oct and we left 22 Sept so do the math.
Well on 11 Oct I bought a sunhat and a beach top - so I will need to donate the Helly Hansen fleece to make room in my luggage. We can't be so bundled up on our flight next week moving from one summer weather location to another!
The hat and top don't match but I can use this colour hat through my trip and also back home.
15 Oct update: my suitcase has a separate strap - well purchased separately and I got it for two reasons - to help identify my bag (the suitcase is black, the strap is turquoise) and to hold everything together if the zipper breaks from over packing or being thrown around if I have to check it instead of carrying onboard. Today it is serving a third purpose, attaching my raincoat to the outside of my suitcase. This frees up a lot of interior room and because my suitcase is undersized for cabin baggage it works. My raincoat comes with its own zippered pouch and I had my doubts if this would work but it did. As an alternative you could just wrap it up in a plastic (or cloth) bag. Voila!
Jeff bought a t-shirt today so these items take up space and I am running out of things to give away. At the end of the trip I can part with the long sleeve black t-shirt and a sleeveless shirt if I need a bit more space.
We are doing fine with carry on only with clothes for weather ranging from 8 C to 34 C!
This is my carry on:
Say what you will about TEMU - and I am not a big fan - I brought a two piece set, loose baggy pants and sleeveless vest set - very thin unknown material - fairly cool because it is loose, not because it's breathable fabric - I wore it daily almost in the hot weather and it's still hanging together. It packed up small and didn't really wrinkle - so it was my go to for over a month. This is 2 Nov and 22 C in Sicily - I am wearing it today. It's black which hides a multitude of sins and cost was about $25 C. Proof about wearing it (not a fashion statement but functional)

I am afraid to wash it so just spot clean!
